A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

Follow the Philharmonic into A Midsummer Night’s Dream, featuring the magical works of Mendelssohn and Schumann. The evening will begin with pieces from the score written by Mendelssohn for William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the music of which is arguably the most famous incidental music ever composed. The last symphony composed by Schumann; Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major (Rhenish) will close the concert. The Philharmonic will be led by spirited German conductor Elias Grandy.

BIZET’S CARMEN

The Philharmonic Orchestra presents a musical event featuring the incredible works of Bizet and Schubert. The concert will highlight Suites No. 1 and No. 2 from French composer Bizet’s famous opera Carmen, considered one of the greatest operas of the 19th century. The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 9 in C Major, otherwise known as Great C Major, a piece described as ‘pure musical majesty’, and the final large-scale orchestral work by Austrian composer Schubert. The Philharmonic will be led by inspired German conductor Elias Grandy.

GULF FOLK MEETS THE PHILHARMONIC

September 2, 2023 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre, Souq Waqif

The Qatar Philharmonic opens the 2023/24 season with a unique musical event that aims to enhance and preserve Gulf folk music by intertwining traditional Gulf folk styles with a Western orchestra. The music will emphasise Qatar’s rich maritime history with influences from the art of ‘Fijiri’, a traditional form of music associated with pearl divers and the sea. The Philharmonic’s Deputy Executive Director, Nasser Sahim composed the music for the event, with Dr. Amer Jaffar. The orchestra will be led by distinguished Uzbek conductor Kamoliddin Urinbaev.

‘MUSIC FROM THE CORONATION’ A CORONATION CELEBRATIONS OF KING CHARLES III

THE PHILHARMONIC AT THE LIBRARY: Harmoniemusik for Wind Octet

The term Harmoniemusik is usually used to describe a wind chamber ensemble of flexible instrumentation. In the eighteenth century, this type of performance was frequently found at the court and salons of musical Europe. Members of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will perform pieces for wind octet by Rossini, Haydn, Beethoven and Dvořák in the final concert of the Philharmonic at the Library Series 2022-23.

GERSHWIN’S PIANO CONCERTO IN F

Join the Qatar Philharmonic for an enchanting evening featuring the magnificent works of Ginastera, Gershwin, and Stravinsky. The performance will begin with Argentine composer Ginastera’s Estancia Orchestral Suite and one-act ballet, a piece that references gaucho culture, folk dances, and the landscapes of Argentina. The night will continue with Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, a composition that is considered one of Gershwin’s “serious” pieces, that will be performed by First Steinway Artist in the Middle East, Sonja Park. The performance will conclude with Stravinsky’s stunning The Firebird Suite, a piece that is based on the Russian legend of the Firebird and that propelled the composer to international success. The Philharmonic will be led by incredible Iranian conductor Hossein Pishkar.

TCHAIKOVSKY’S SYMPHONY NO. 6 IN B MINOR “PATHÉTIQUE”

The Qatar Philharmonic presents Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, a concert that will feature the incredible compositions of Tchaikovsky and Sibelius. The event will include Sibelius’ exceptional Violin Concerto in D Minor, a piece that is a considered a staple in any violinist’s repertoire, and that will be performed by the orchestra’s own concert master Lionel Schmit. The evening will end with Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony, also known as the Pathétique Symphony. The Pathétique Symphony is Tchaikovsky’s final completed symphony and was originally entitled “The Passionate Symphony” in Russian (Патетическая- Pateticheskaya). The Philharmonic will be led by inspired German conductor Elias Grandy.

BEETHOVEN’S SYMPHONY NO. 2 IN D MAJOR

The Qatar Philharmonic invites you to a special evening featuring the astonishing works of Beethoven, Haydn, and Arnold.  The concert will include Beethoven’s Second Symphony, a piece that was mostly composed during his stay at Heiligenstadt in 1802, a period in which his deafness was becoming more pronounced. The orchestra will also perform Haydn’s Symphony No. 101, quirkily nicknamed “The Clock”, inspired by Haydn’s trips to London, in which you will notice something quite striking- a rhythmic pulse sound that sounds like an old clock. Arnold’s impressive Concerto No. 1 for Horn solo will be performed by the orchestra’s own, Peter Davida. The Philharmonic will be led by passionate German conductor Elias Grandy.

Join the Qatar Philharmonic for a captivating evening featuring the works of Haydn, Brahms, and Bartók. The concert will begin with Haydn’s Surprise Symphony, a byname of Symphony No. 94 in G Major, named for the “surprise”- an astoundingly loud chord- that punctuates the gentle flow of the second movement. The performance will continue with Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Haydn, a composition based on the theme and variations of the Saint Anthony Chorale by Haydn. The night will end with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a colourful showpiece that is arguably the most popular of Bartók’s orchestral works. The Philharmonic will be led by spirited German conductor Elias Grandy.
