The Philharmonic presents a dramatic musical concert featuring the influential works from Wagner, Khachaturian, and Strauss. The concert will include pieces from Wagner’s revolutionary operas such as, Tannhäuser, Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman), and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Master-Singers of Nuremberg)– as well as excerpts from Khachaturian’s incidental music for the play Masquerade, and some of his works from the ballet Gayane. The event will conclude with a flourish, with the orchestra performing some of Strauss’ iconic waltzes (Kaiser-Walzer) and polkas (Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka). The Philharmonic will perform under the baton of internationally sought-after session conductor Johannes Vogel for this spectacular evening.

Join the Philharmonic for an evening of Serenades by Dvorak and Mozart. The event’s first half will take you through Dvorak’s Wind Serenade in D Minor, a piece that evokes the old-world atmosphere of musical performances at the castles of the Rococo period. The second half will see Mozart’s Serenade for Orchestra in D Major performed. The work is popularly known as the Haffner Serenade as it was commissioned to be used during the wedding festivities of Marie Elisabeth Haffner and Franz Xaver Spaeth on the 21^st of July 1776. The orchestra’s established and multi-grounded concertmaster Joo Young Oh will perform as soloist and lead the Philharmonic as conductor for this enchanting event.

The great Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev composed many of his most popular works, including Peter and the Wolf in 1936. Prokofiev subtitled this piece “An Orchestral Fairy Tale for Children,” but he should have added “and for adults, too,” as this remarkable composition is appealing to people of all ages. The story of Peter and the Wolf is told by a narrator, with the orchestra musically illustrating the events that unfold for the audience.

Sergei Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf

In this first concert of the Philharmonic at the Library Series 2022-23, eight members of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra join forces to perform Schubert’s Octet in F Major. This beloved titan of the chamber music repertoire consists of six movements and effuses tender warmth of expression and lyrical beauty from first note to last.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra presents a unique musical event that aims to enhance and preserve Gulf folk music by intertwining traditional Gulf folk styles with a Western orchestra for the first time.

Gulf Folk Meets the Philharmonic

The music will put particular emphasis on Qatar’s rich maritime history with influences from the art of ‘Fijiri’, a traditional form of music associated with pearl divers and the sea. The Philharmonic’s Deputy Executive Director, Nasser Sahim composed the music for the event, with Dr. Amer Jaffar and Mansour Al Mohanadi, a Qatari singer providing vocals for the performance.

The event will include a traditional Gulf percussion group led by Dr. Faisal Ibrahim Al-Tamimi, composer, Qatari director and researcher in arts and Qatari folklore.
