In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the independence of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra presents a stirring evening of music that bridges cultures and continents. This special concert, held in collaboration with the Embassy of Uruguay, pays tribute to Uruguay’s rich musical heritage and its enduring cultural ties with the world.
Under the baton of esteemed conductor Marcus Bosch, and featuring the outstanding Uruguayan soprano Sofia Mara, the evening opens with the national anthems of both Qatar and Uruguay, symbolising the spirit of cross-cultural exchange at the heart of this celebration.
The programme journeys through the soulful rhythms of Uruguay’s iconic tangos La Cumparsita by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez and Mi Vieja Viola by Humberto Correa, to evocative works by contemporary Uruguayan composers such as Jaurés Lamarque Pons, César Cortinas, and Federico García Vigil. These pieces capture the essence of Uruguay’s vibrant musical identity, ranging from candombe traditions to opera and symphonic variation.
The second half of the concert showcases timeless European gems, including arias and overtures from Verdi, Puccini, Giménez, Delibes and Bizet, reflecting Uruguay’s historical artistic influences and deep ties to classical music traditions.

Experience a concert of cultural dialogue, as the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra showcases a special preview performance in Doha ahead of its debut at the world-renowned Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Presented as part of the Qatar-Argentina 2025 Year of Culture, the concert reflects a shared commitment to deepening understanding through the universal language of music.
The Years of Culture initiative, chaired by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, creates spaces where such encounters can take place. Each edition links Qatar with a partner country through programmes that highlight cultural heritage, creative industries, social and economic development and innovation. These collaborations encourage genuine dialogue and the building of shared cultural memory.
The concert will bring together tango, Arab traditions, and classical symphonies, reflecting this mission through sound. It is both a debut and a dialogue. It is a gift of music that honours Argentina’s traditions while introducing the audience to the Philharmonic’s distinctive voice, connecting people across continents.

The concert opens with Friedrich Gulda’s genre-defying Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra, performed by QPO’s Hassan Moataz El Molla, a dazzling fusion of classical tradition with jazz, funk, and improvisation. After the intermission, the orchestra turns to the vibrant spirit of Spain with Manuel de Falla’s evocative Three-Cornered Hat Suites, brimming with folkloric energy and theatrical drama. The evening concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliant Capriccio Espagnol, a virtuosic showcase of orchestral colour inspired by Spanish melodies and dances.

Camille Thomas then takes the stage for Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, a deeply expressive and hauntingly beautiful work that has become a pillar of the cello repertoire. Following the intermission, the orchestra performs one of the most rhythmically exhilarating works in the symphonic canon:Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. Brimming with infectious vitality and emotional depth, it’s a triumphant close to an unforgettable evening.

Diaz then takes centre stage in Vaughan Williams’ Concerto in F Minor for Tuba, a rarely performed gem that showcases the instrument’s unexpected agility and rich character. After the intermission, the orchestra presents Elgar’s masterful Variations on an Original Theme (better known as the Enigma Variations), a work of profound emotional range and one of the cornerstones of the English orchestral repertoire.
