A Musical Encounter: Sounds of Qatar and Argentina

As part of Qatar Museums’ Year of Culture with Argentina and Chile, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra presents a special preview performance in Doha ahead of its upcoming concert at the world-renowned Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires on 17 September. This cross-cultural programme, conducted by Argentine maestro Enrique Diemecke, celebrates the rich musical dialogue between Qatar and Latin America. The evening features Astor Piazzolla’s iconic Concerto for Bandoneón “Aconcagua”, performed by acclaimed soloist Victor Hugo Villena, as well as works by celebrated Argentine composers Esteban Benzecry and Alberto Ginastera. Representing Qatar’s contemporary music scene, the Philharmonic will perform compositions by Dana Alfardan and Nasser Sahim, blending cinematic textures with the spirit of traditional Arabic music. This concert offers Doha audiences a unique opportunity to experience the programme that will represent Qatar on one of the world’s greatest stages.

Experience an evening of vivid musical storytelling as conductor Elias Grandy leads the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme bursting with rhythm and flair. The concert opens with Friedrich Gulda’s genre-defying Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra, performed by QPO’s Hassan Moataz El Molla, a dazzling fusion of classical tradition with jazz, funk, and improvisation. After the intermission, the orchestra turns to the vibrant spirit of Spain with Manuel de Falla’s evocative Three-Cornered Hat Suites, brimming with folkloric energy and theatrical drama. The evening concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliant Capriccio Espagnol, a virtuosic showcase of orchestral colour inspired by Spanish melodies and dances.

Join the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra for a rousing evening of Romantic and Classical masterworks under the baton of conductor Andreas S. Weiser, featuring acclaimed cellist Camille Thomas. The concert opens with Mozart’s cosi fan tutti overture, a light, elegant and playful orchestral piece  filled with energy and wit. Camille Thomas then takes the stage for Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, a deeply expressive and hauntingly beautiful work that has become a pillar of the cello repertoire. Following the intermission, the orchestra performs one of the most rhythmically exhilarating works in the symphonic canon:Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The evening opens with Xu Zhen-Min’s evocative Night Mooring at Maple Bridge, followed by two beloved Chinese melodies—From Afar and A Lovely Rose. Diaz then takes centre stage in Vaughan Williams Concerto in F Minor for Tuba, a rarely performed gem that showcases the instrument’s unexpected agility and rich character. After the intermission, the orchestra presents Elgar’s masterful Variations on an Original Theme (better known as the Enigma Variations), a work of profound emotional range and one of the cornerstones of the English orchestral repertoire.
