Conductor Nader Abbasi leads the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme of dramatic intensity and emotional depth, featuring masterworks by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. The evening opens with Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, followed by the sweeping passion of Romeo and Juliet: Fantasy Overture, a timeless musical portrayal of Shakespeare’s tragic lovers. After the interval, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 54 offers a striking contrast, moving from its hauntingly introspective opening to two energetic, sharply characterized movements that showcase the composer’s wit, brilliance, and emotional complexity.

Conductor Marcus Bosch (two-time Opus Klassik winner), leads the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme of storytelling. The evening opens with Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite, a shimmering fairy-tale score full of magic and menace. After the interval, Bosch turns to Gershwin with the effervescent An American in Paris, receiving its Qatar premiere, followed by Catfish Row, the symphonic suite drawn from “Porgy and Bess”.

Violinist Esther Yoo (youngest prizewinner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition), joins the orchestra for Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major, one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire. After the interval, the programme lives up to its title with Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G Minor, radically transformed into a full orchestral work by Arnold Schoenberg. Familiar Brahms  experienced in a way you’ve never heard before.

The programme showcases four Canadian composers rarely heard in this part of the world; Morawetz’s vibrant Carnival Overture, Mercure’s colourful Kaleidoscope, and Hétu’s evocative On the Banks of the Saint-Maurice River, followed after the interval by Morawetz’s ambitious Symphony No. 2. Oskar Morawetz: Symphony No. 2

Conductor Felix Mildenberger (winner of the Donatella Flick London Symphony Orchestra Conducting Competition and former assistant to Sir Simon Rattle), leads the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme built around its own stars. Four of the orchestra’s principal wind players step into the spotlight for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, oboist Germán Díaz Blanco, clarinettist Rony Moser, bassoonist Yoshiko Koyama, and horn player Peter Davida, in a joyful conversation between four solo voices and the orchestra. The evening opens with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, inspired by the crashing waves of a Scottish sea cave, and closes with his Symphony No. 1, written when the composer was just fifteen.
