In September 2013, Han-Na Chang became the Music Director of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Principal Guest Conductor of the Trondheim Symfoniorkester, both appointments immediately following her debut appearances with the orchestras.
Guest engagements in coming seasons include debuts with Staatskapelle Dresden, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, the Gothenburg, Cincinnati and Indianapolis symphony orchestras, and National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, as well as a return visit to Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli. Recent engagements include appearances with the Seattle Symphony, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, the Grosses Orchester Graz and the Singapore, Tokyo, and Tivoli symphony orchestras.
A passionate advocate for the importance of classical music in the modern community, Chang founded the annual Absolute Classic Festival in Korea in 2009, where she serves as Artistic Director. Each August, the newly auditioned orchestra presents diverse programmes aimed to revitalize the orchestral experience for musicians and audiences alike. With MBC TV, she produced a seven-part documentary-performance series featuring an introduction to the Beethoven Symphonies for the general public.
Han-Na Chang first gained international recognition for her precocious musical talents at the age of 11 when she won both the First Prize and the Contemporary Music Prize at the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris in 1994. Since then she has collaborated with the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Münchner Philharmoniker, The Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras, and the London, Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal, Pittsburgh and Boston symphony orchestras, as well as Sydney Symphony, l’Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Filarmonica della Scala and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Her recordings, exclusively for EMI Classics, have received the ECHO Klassik, Caecilia Award, Cannes Classical Award and the Gramophone Concerto of the Year among others and remain world-wide bestsellers.
Han-Na Chang studied Philosophy at Harvard University and currently serves as the Roving Goodwill Ambassador for the Korean Red Cross.
